FEATURING needham's joan kelley + her innovative literacy app: abound....for young children and parents
- As week four of “sheltering-in-place” begins, parents with young children can benefit from the ambition of local literacy guru Joan Kelley. “Sanity-in-Place” – a free, weekly feature offered through Abound Parenting – delivers a list of reading-related activities for children ages 3 to 6 right to your inbox! “The daily schedule is easy enough to make happen, allows some parent time, and limits children's screen time . It also works on reading-related skills little ones need to develop, so you can feel good about what you're doing at home,” Joan describes.
A key member of the Language Diversity and Literacy Development Research Group at Harvard Graduate School of Education for over a decade, Joan has also taught locally (in the Needham Public Schools) and has consulted with school systems across the country on building language and pre-reading skills from the earliest years.
After years of research and development, Joan collaborated last summer with MIT to launch Abound . As Joan explains, “We don’t do a good job involving parents in kids’ reading development. There are certain skills that kids need to read successfully in middle and high school and families don’t know that these skills have to accumulate over time. Our app helps parents figure out how their young children (3 years to kindergarten) are doing today , and then provides fun and easy daily conversation starters to help children build these critical skills.”
Meanwhile, in response to the Covid-19 crisis, Joan recently created Abound's (free) Sanity-In-Place program to help all families during this disruptive time. Just follow the steps below to get involved, and click here to join the weekly email list.
